Welcome to the Third Grade

Curriculum Night

The third grade curriculum night will be held on Wednesday, September 10 from 7:00 to 7:45.  We will have half an hour together in the classroom together before we gather with the other third grade parents and teachers in the multi-purpose room.  I do hope you will come.  We will talk about this exciting new year in your child's educational journey.

My Email address is kochl@issaquah.wednet.edu.  This is really the best way to reach me is you have questions or concerns.  You can also reach me at 425-837-7251.  I don't pick up the phone during class and you will be directed to voice mail.  If you need to urgently reach me or your child during class time it is best to call the office at 425- 837-7230.

Snack Time

We are a peanut free classroom.

Kids work hard, and they get hungry!  We will have snack time after the morning recess each day.    Please try to make this a healthy, easy to eat snack.  I would appreciate it if you would avoid sending candy and soda.

  Specialists

We go to PE on Thursdays at 1:05.  It really helps Ms. Patton out if the children wear gym appropriate shoes that day.  Sandals and leather soles make for unplanned slipping and sliding on the gym floor.

Mrs. Wangeman is our library specialist.  Our library day is Wednesday.  Our time is 10:10. This is the day the students receive  instruction on the various resources available in the  library. This is also the day students, individually check out and return books.  Books are due (or must be renewed) two weeks after the checkout date.  We use the library services and resources often, outside our scheduled time.

Computer lab is Thursday at 12:35  The children spend half an hour with Mrs. Muller.  Mrs. Muller saves all the students documents in a portfolio.  they will bring the portfolio home in June.  One big unit is full-finger keyboarding, which they begin soon. This is know the keyboarding unit works.  The students come to the computer lab 3 times per week for 3 weeks from October 3rd to 20th.  They go once during their regularly scheduled time with Mrs. Muller, and twice with me.  Students are encouraged to practice at home with the software we will provide ( a take-home license privilege is granted by the software company "Keywords")  This is Mrs. Muller's webpage, where you can find the district keyboarding benchmarks.

Art class with Mrs. Moring is on alternate Wednesdays at 8:25.  That is first thing in the morning so we are going to have to be careful about getting here on time.  The students learn  art history, art appreciation, technique and production in Mrs. Moring's class.

We attend music class with Mrs. Hirtz on Mondays at 9:15, and sing our little hearts out.

Spelling Our spelling program is designed to adapt to each students needs.  The words are high frequency words.  The goal of the program is to facilitate student writing.  You will receive one list for the school year.  After your child has been assessed he will receive a list.  Your child can work through the lists at his own pace.  (Check the homework page)

Reading Our reading groups are pretty flexible in class.  Sometimes your child may come up twice in a day.  The groups are formed to accommodate current needs or interests of the students.  Right now I am still working on assessing those needs and interests.  We have just begun reading groups.  We work on all aspects of reading to help students learn, word recognition through context clues, phonetic analysis and semantics.  We work on comprehension skills, both literal and inferential through discussion of books or stories we are reading.  We perform in class plays, write our own stories, research and create reports, posters and books.

Social Studies

I teach reading, writing, math, in fact all subjects through our science and social studies themes.  We are starting out with a study of rocks, minerals and fossils.  During the year we will cover many topics, including (but not limited to) the local watershed, electricity, geography and map reading, north west coastal Indians, pioneers of the Puget Sound area and government.

Math

As you are probably aware we are beginning our second year using Everyday Math.  The Everyday Math series has a lot to offer. It was developed by the University of Chicago School of Mathematics Project. The program is devised to develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts through a curriculum that is varied, rich and rooted in real-world problems and applications.
