Math Facts

It is time to internalize those math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).  This is pretty much rote learning.

I've found a great website. http://home.indy.rr.com/lrobinson/mathfacts/mathfacts.html There are many others. Have the kids practice

vertical, not just horizontal equations.

Spelling

Your child will bring home a "Super Speller" when he has successfully completed the work and test  in spelling.  The "Super Speller" slip will indicate which list is completed.  I have sent home a copy of all the spelling lists.  When one list is completed go on to study the next list.  If you lose your list, please let me know.  Children should practice their spelling words as part of daily homework.  this is a journey not a race.  Please, if your child is stressed by practice, stop, don't worry.  It'll be fine.  Pick it up later.

Book Talks and Reports These take a lot of practice.  Start early, avoid the stress!( You have a complete hard copy of the assignments at home)

Book talk reports and projects are designed to integrate language arts, visual arts and communication skills.

There are two parts in each assignment.  In part one the student selects a chapter book from the assigned genre, reads the book,

then evaluates and shares the book with classmates through an oral presentation called a book talk.  The second part of the assignment

is to create and present a visual project inspired by the book.  Students use this project as a prop when presenting the book talk.  The

talks are short (3 to 4 minutes) and concise.  The object is to get other students excited about reading the book.  On the day of the

 book talk your child will:

                                        Bring the book to school

                                        Name the title and author

Summarize the story.  Talk about character, setting and main ideas.

Speak clearly and fluently.  Use gestures and vocal expression.

It is very important to practice the presentation aloud several times before trying to speak to the whole class.
