5/12 Homework is assigned every Monday and is to be completed throughout the week. Homework may be turned in at anytime during the week however, all homework is due on the following Monday except for the reading calendar and sharing projects. Sharing is due on your child's sharing day and the reading calendar is due on the last school day of the month. Optional homework is completely optional. I provide these ideas for those of you who feel that your child needs a little extra homework. However, remember that the recommended homework time for first grade is 10-15 minutes a night.
Reading
Please read for 10-15 minutes everyday and record your time on the reading calendar. Work on your reading worksheet.
Sight Word Practice: Your child will be reading sight words on flash cards throughout the week. The words that he/she can not read within five seconds will be written down on the "Words for me to practice" sheet. This sheet will then go home. Please practice these words by having your child read the word as quickly as possible. Your child will then re-read the words on flash cards at school until he/she knows the words. I hope to have your child read the flash cards at least once if not twice a week with a parent volunteer.
Optional Homework Write down new words you found in the books you are reading. Look them up in a dictionary and write them in a sentence then turn it in.
Work on your math worksheet. Thanks!
Please take a look at the family letters for Everyday Math's Unit 9.
Math Facts: You child has begun working on his/her math facts with volunteers in the classroom. He or she started with the 1s as in 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 1+3=4 etc. However, the math equations will not be in order as in 1+5=6, 1+2=3, 1+10=11, etc. If your child can solve all of the 1s equations quickly (3-5 seconds per equation) he/she will advance to the 2s and so on. Once he/she is unable to solve all the equations in a set he/she will be given a slip of paper indicating which set of equations that he/she needs to work on at home. He/she will work with a volunteer about once a week. There are many ways to practice these equations. One way is to have your child make his\her own flash cards and then you can practice these equations with your child.
Optional Homework Telling time and working with money continue to be difficult to many students. Please help your child by drawing clocks on a piece of paper make sure to include a half past, quarter after, and quarter to/before times, then ask your child to tell you the different times. Teach your parents how to play the penny, nickel and dime game.
Spelling: Study all ten spelling words for the week. The challenge word is optional.
Optional homework - Write as many words as you can that have the same sound as our spelling words on a piece of paper and turn it in. Write sentences using your spelling words and turn it in.
Sharing: Work on your sharing project this week.
